North London’s Emel Michael has had music flowing through her veins since birth.

“My earliest memory of music was watching Disney! Ariel and the Little Mermaid was on constant repeat which meant I was singing to my classmates and playing keys, putting on concerts at home. Then I spent years training to be a dancer.”

All of the practice eventually paid dividends with a local producer finding out about her, bizarrely via a part time job at McDonalds and the time honoured practice of passing over a tape with a bag of chips!

“It was very surreal, I was just singing behind the counter and was interrupted by a man who turned out to be a music manager! This led to my first studio experience at sixteen which involved putting vocals down for three songs. It was an experience to say the least; I was offered a deal on the spot but I turned it down as it was too early; I got the bug though and it hasn’t left me”

Influenced by classic songwriters including Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Quincy Jones through to modern day wordsmiths Dido, Adele, and Christina and the Queens, Emel takes delight and pride in her writing ability. “I have written poetry for many, many years and my lyrics are extension of that. I like to paint whether this is with brushes or words, and share emotion and thoughts with the viewer and listener. I like inspiring songs, quirky lyrics, ideas and inspirations which are different to the norm; emotions and ideas that are captivating and visually arresting”

Emel is currently working with producer Richard Cardwell (John Newman, Dido, Joss Stone, Craig David, Nelly Furtado, James Morrison) on new material due for release in October 2018. “Richard is great! It’s wonderful to work with someone who “get’s” my vision and ideas, and translates them from my mind to recordings. It’s like he writes from my imagination.

I can’t wait for everyone to hear them!” - Emel Michael releases House Of Lions on 23rd October 2018
